Application: Diamond Valves and Shunt Systems are designed
to Provide one-way flow control for shunting cerebrospinal fluid
(CSF) from the Ventricles of the brain.
Materials: Silicone elastomer, polysulfone, polyester, and
tantalum.

Description:
The valve assembly is comprised of two silicone elastometer, differential
pressure valve mechanisms in series, connected by an elastic tube,
with an aperture in the side wall, which acts as a flow regulating
mechanism. The valve mechanism is contained within an integral silicone
elastomer chamber with an integral suture base.
Each differential pressure valve mechanism consists of a silicone
elastomer dome with two crossed slits in polysulfone housing. Use
of polysulfone eliminates MRI artifact. Diamond Valves and Diamond
Valve Shunt Systems Contain no Metal Parts. Each differential
pressure valve mechanism opens in response to predetermined differential
pressure and closes when differential pressure has dropped below
a predetermined level.
The design of the valve mechanisms prevents retrograde flow to
the brain. The valve housings incorporate integral proximal and
distal connectors for easy catheter connection.

The operation of the valve mechanism is described below under "Theory
of Operation".
The mechanism are contained within a silicone elastomer chamber,
which acts as a pumping reservoir. The reservoir is self sealing
when penetrated by a 25 gauge or smaller Huner-point needle or equivalent
non-coring needle. This permits removal of CSF samples, as well
as injection of contrast media, medication or flushing fluid.
The base of the valve is polyester reinforced silicone elastomer
to permit suturing of the valve to the pericranium. Integral Hemmer
sleeves extend over the connectors, protecting catheter connections
from ligature stress and disconnection.
The valve base and all catheters are radiopaque. The valve is marked
with a radiopaque flow direction arrow.
